8 years tracking air tightness performance
Quality
New homes across Canada exceed building code by 14.5%
Energy
Reduced rental property energy consumption by 14% since 2019.
Carbon
Cut rental property carbon emissions by 14% since 2019
Diverting more construction waste from landfill
Conventional construction generates significant waste. At Minto, we strive to reduce this waste. Our Canadian homebuilding team has tracked construction waste diversion since 2009. Last year, we saw a 2.2% improvement over the previous year and are now just 0.4% away from our ambitious goal of reaching 80% waste diversion.

Achieving industry-leading air tightness in low-rise homes
A big part of energy efficiency and resident comfort is keeping homes air-tight. Our homebuilding team in Canada has been tracking air tightness and related performance on our low-rise homes since 2015, and has set internal targets that surpass the minimum requirements of the ENERGY STAR® for New Homes program. Our performance in 2023 beat historical averages for almost all product types. Notably, our single family homes and back-to-back townhomes performed very well, which speaks to the depth of our team’s dedication.

Continuing our efforts to reduce water consumption
Our water use increased slightly again in 2023 and continues to be higher than our 2019 baseline year primarily because water use behaviour changed since the pandemic. People have continued to be at home more, using more water. Additionally, less summer rainfall at some of our properties impacts irrigation consumption. Despite the challenges, we remain committed to reducing water consumption across all our properties. Our efforts include: toilet renewals, toilet sensor technologies, Evolve™ showerheads and resident education.
