KEY INITIATIVES

Our first community is our employees

As an employer, homebuilder, and rental housing provider, we understand the deep responsibility we have to the people whose lives we touch. We begin every major decision by prioritizing the needs of our employees and thinking about how we can continue to build a more inclusive, rewarding, and healthy place to work.

Nurturing the growth and potential of every employee

People learn and grow in places where they feel psychologically safe and supported. Where they are engaged, productive, and healthy. That’s why we focus so much on mental well-being, inclusivity, and career development.

In 2023, to continue to help each and every employee develop, we launched our mentorship program Mentorship @ Minto. We also launched new DEI learning components so it’s woven into our career offerings.

"To be accountable for your growth and development, one should always be pushing to learn new insights. I believe there is always an opportunity to find ways to better oneself, but it does take commitment, investment of time and energy, as well as good self-awareness. At Minto, we hope to provide a mix of ways people can learn and flexibility in our offerings because each individual is unique and so is their learning style and capability. "

A culture of recognition

Employee recognition increases productivity, employee engagement, employee satisfaction and enjoyment of work while improving our culture. Since launching our BRAVO! employee recognition program in 2016, over 86 percent of employees have received recognition awards for going above and beyond in how they contribute to our success—both day-to-day and during difficult times.

Reaching new heights on employee engagement

We want to hear directly from employees because we want them to know we value them and their ideas. It reinforces the very true idea that we’re all in this together.

That’s why we conduct Gallup’s ongoing employee engagement survey Gallup Q12 every 12-24 months. We’ve improved our scores on these significantly since 2015, which shows they work—employees share, see changes, and feel more committed to sharing.

A safe and healthy place to work

We’re committed to creating a healthy and safe place to work.  Health and safety is a top priority and a key metric in our annual incentive plan. We have systems in place to comply with Canadian and U.S. legislation.  We set occupational health and safety objectives and implement strategies to continually improve our management program through controls, policies, in-depth training and performance indicators.

Over the past five years, our injury frequency rate lowered from 1.9 in 2019 to 1.12 in 2023. Despite this, the injury severity rose from 17.7 in 2019 to 33.09 in 2023, reflecting more injuries with time lost.

Best in class benefits ensure employees stay well

Minto offers a comprehensive benefits package and extensive wellness program that encourages everything from physical and mental health to management skills and parenting advice.

We regularly seek feedback from our employees to update these benefits. This year, we expanded our Pregnancy/Parental Leave Top-Up Program for Canadian employees to help them further bridge the financial gap between government-funded parental benefits. We believe everyone should feel comfortable taking time off work when a new child comes into their care—and this helps ensure it.

Retaining employees and their expertise

We enhance the employee experience and minimize undesirable attrition through our performance management process. Every employee is encouraged to request and receive feedback at least once per quarter, which helps everyone understand each other, strengthen our culture, and reach our goals.

In 2023, our voluntary attrition rate dropped to 12.9% from 14.4% in 2022 and 18.4% in 2021. We’re hard at work getting it back down to our target of 10%, which we achieved in 2020 (9.8%).

"Our parental leave update came about as a direct result of comments employees made in our annual survey. It’s been a powerful way to strengthen our employee experience."

Jo-Ann Taylor,
Chief Human Resources Officer
