Minto Communities GTA wins Low-Rise Green Builder of the year at the 2021 BILD awards

This year’s win marks the third time Minto Communities GTA has been recognized by the prestigious BILD awards for excellence in sustainable building practices

October 20, 2021 - (Toronto) Minto Communities GTA, one of Ontario’s top real estate development companies, was recognized by the 2021 BILD awards earlier this month, winning the Green Builder of the Year award in the low-rise category. Presented by the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD), the Green Builder of the Year award is a Pinnacle Award and celebrates the achievements of developers who are leading the charge in sustainable building practices. The award comes on-the-heels of a remarkably successful year for Minto Communities GTA, who launched Net Zero Ready homes as an upgrade feature in both the Union Village master-planned community in Markham as well as The Heights of Harmony in North Oshawa to enthusiastic reception. Net Zero homes are homes that are designed to produce as much energy as they consume over a year-long period.

“Sustainability and green building practices have been part of the Minto Communities story since our inception over 65 years ago and we are consistently thoughtful in how we incorporate these aspects into our communities from the very early stages of design,” says Roya Khaleeli, Director of Sustainability and Innovation, Minto Communities GTA. “As a developer, we are committed to building homes that are healthier, protected from rising utility costs, and with lower greenhouse gas emissions, as well as being beautifully designed. We offer homes that encompass features including better air tightness, zoned HVAC, and integrated waste collection in communities like Union Village and The Heights of Harmony. We are proud and passionate industry leaders in the sustainability space and will continue to prioritize this important work.”

As part of low-rise innovation for Minto Communities GTA, the developer has continued to explore new ways to improve air tightness in homes, ultimately resulting in greater comfort, better performance and lower energy bills for homeowners. To improve air tightness, Minto Communities GTA has been applying AeroBarrier technology to select products that are more challenging to seal than conventional methods. The AeroBarrier system is used during the construction process, during which sealant in vapor form is injected into a pressurized home to help seal holes up to half-an-inch, ensuring less air leaks in or out of the home.

Along with offering Net Zero homes as an upgrade feature at Union Village and on select models of The Heights of Harmony, Minto Communities GTA is also offering zoned HVAC as a standard in some product types, another mechanism to improve comfort and lower energy bills. By using zoned HVAC systems, homeowners can deliver heating and cooling more effectively with customized temperature zones within the home.

Every year, the BILD awards recognize the astounding achievements of developers, new home builders, architects, designers and sales and marketing professionals across the region. 2021’s awards saw over 1,000 entries submitted, with a panel of 52 experts from across North America and Europe selecting winners. Minto Communities GTA previously won Green Builder of the Year in the low-rise category in 2013 and 2017.
